You gotta give Miguel de Icaza credit.

As a Microsoft shareholder I’ve been opposed to Mono.

Not as technology, but as theft of Microsoft’s Technology. [Personal opinion, not a statement of Microsoft’s Position.]

Now, before the attack start – just Google Me. I’m as active in Open Source Developer Technologies as I am in Closed Source.

For developers who seek to actively avoid Microsoft technology, I respect their choice, so (and ESPECIALLY where Mono is concerned.)

  1. Stop being mad at Microsoft for choosing not to ship products on Linux.
  2. Do YOUR OWN thing on Linux or cross-platform, but don’t try to do OUR thing on Linux.

So, philosophically, I think Mono is both theft and hypocritical.

(Ok, NOW you can attack.)

But, politics aside – you really gotta give Miguel de Icaza big credit. He’s keeps doing really significant stuff.

Gnome (of which he’s the co-founder) kicks butt and has surpassed KDE as the popular Linux Desktop, Mono, whatever one thinks of the politics, is significant (and amazing when you consider the size of the development team), and NOW………

MOONLIGHT

Quite an accomplishment.

Not an attack (I think), but Mono at least got its start from the ECMA CLI and C# standards. Which, if memory serves, were standardized to "enable alternate implementations." So, in one sense, he's doing what Microsoft wanted people to do.

Granted, he has gone well beyond those two standards, into the realm of photocopy technology. Little could be done about that, I'm afraid. Litigation would be incredibly wrong, or Microsoft could simply stop documenting their APIs ;)

(And yes, Mono and Moonlight are both incredible, and the pace of development mind-boggling)

Perhaps - but at least I have the balls to identify myself when I express an opinion.

I love .NET, but I think that it's sad to hear that you aren't a big fan of mono.
Mono is the best thing that could happen. If a language can be used in more platforms, then you get bigger communities for .NET and that would result to a lot more people helping each other and a lot of more code examples(less people asking questions).
The other thing is that it means, that .NET is getting more and more near to be multi platforms compatible as Java, and isn't it that what we all want to happen? Smile
I was really happy the time I read the news about mono supporting vb.net, but
none of my .NET applications did work under mono, basically because the lack of components that didn't exist in mono, so at my point of view, they have a lot of work to do.

LMAO I was thinking the same thing. What a jerk.

However, I disagree with you. First of all, being a shareholder makes your opinion on this matter rather biased. And you are kinda outting yourself by saying that you totally condone the creation of open-source software, but only if it does not run on an open source operating system. That's a fairly monopolizing comment (but I wont call you a communist just yet!) I don't believe it's theft at all. I don't really understand why you are bothered when a free Microsoft product like ASP.NET or Silverlight is utilized on something other than Windows. Now granted it might not be the best thing for Microsoft, but is it really hurting them? Are they losing? Not at all. Microsoft is still winning. Think about it, Linux users obviously realize they cannot re-create the same experience that comes from .NET/Silverlight with the tools they have, so instead of even attempting to re-create it, they work on something like Mono to get your fabulous technologies to run on their end. You should be honored to have that much credibility!

I really do not expect Microsoft to completely support or intrigue the development of things like Mono, but calling it theft and hypocritical is quite ludicrous. If anything, you should be pleased at the amount of interest in Microsoft products from those running on different platforms. Generally speaking, someone running a non-Windows OS is a Microsoft hater more times than not. And I feel that Mono is starting to set these haters straight. It's not bringing them back to Windows, but nevertheless they are gaining the desire to utilize other MS technologies. And I think that's just wonderful. They can have their cake and eat it too. They can have their Linux and run .NET too. It's a perfect world!

My two cents.

MS has copied some good ideas from others and has integrated them into its OS and tecnologies (let's say Internet Explorer VS Netscape, Windows Media VS Real Player).

If .NET has good points why do not port it to the paradigm of freedom? As well, while MS took advantage of his dominant position mono does not.

Maybe MS should be proud of it and say "For the first time I am being copied and I am not copying others, maybe I am doing things good!"
