Netcraft says IIS up 2.6 Million Sites while Apache Down 991K Sites

I place VERY tempered confidence in statistics and have never been a huge fan of the Netcraft numbers as I think they are often used to make arguments that their predicate data does not support.

Still, this is interesting.

NetCraft web server survey says …..

Microsoft continues to increase its web server market share, adding 2.6 million sites this month as Apache loses 991K hostnames.

Gotta love that.

It's interesting that it spiked similarly when .NET 1.0 became widely available. This current spike seems to line up pretty well with about the time that Atlas began to show promise, so I'll buy it.

I wonder what hurt Apache so badly.

Can someone explain what is a 991K host when. And what do you mean you gotta love that - IIS is proprietary software - get a grip will you.
